Gift Ideas

October 2, 2017

Maybe it's a little early to be thinking about Christmas already, but I'm the type of person who likes to get a jump-start on my gift list. If you're like me, you will appreciate the list I'm about to give you.

Sometimes it's challenging to know what sorts of items to buy for your loved one who lives in a nursing home. These are a few ideas I've seen others give along with a few ideas from what residents themselves have mentioned. Not all of these gifts fit everyone, so know the recipient. Also, the prices of these items vary drastically. Pick a price that you're comfortable with.

  • puzzle books

  • cozy blankets or socks

  • jigsaw puzzles

  • books

  • stereo system and a few favorite CDs

  • snacks

  • houseplants

  • flameless candles (wick candles are prohibited at the Home)

  • handcrafting supplies

  • a photo album of a special time in his/her life.

  • a door hanging

  • adult coloring pages and colored pencils

  • stamps, stationary, and envelopes

  • a simple or familiar game

  • a stress ball or something else that is easy to toy with

  • a coffee-table book (or something with lots of pictures

  • a framed picture of the resident's family

  • a family or hometown history book

  • a subscription to a favorite magazine or newspaper

  • something handmade or home-baked

  • a date

  • a project to work on together

  • his/her favorite hot tea bags or hot chocolate packets

There are many more ideas out there, but this list should help to get you started in the right direction. Remember, a gift does not have to be expensive to be valuable.
