Resolutions in the New Year

 Millions of people make wonderful resolutions each new year. And almost everyone breaks them by March.

Maybe that's too severe. Maybe more people succeed in their goals than I realize.

I know that I used to start out the year with good intentions only to trip up before I'd half-way completed them.

But last year I did well with my goals. Here are a few things that helped me actually achieve them:

  • Be realistic. It's not likely that you'll be able to lose one hundred pounds this year. Even less likely that you'll keep it off. But it is realistic that you start making wise decisions. Maybe you could lose ten or fifteen. Or maybe you could simply name a food item that you will only eat once a week or month.

  • Be specific. Taking the example of weight loss, it's easy to say that you will "eat healthy," but what does that mean-specifically? Does that mean you will eat four servings of vegetables and stay away from sweets?

  • Write it down and be public with your resolutions. I post mine on my personal blog each year. I have dozens of eyes watching for me to make my resolutions a habit, and you should too.

  • Acknowledge failure when it happens. There's nothing worse than trying to convince yourself and everyone around you that peppermint bark is, in fact, healthy. No one will believe you, anyway, so you may as well confess and start over.

  • Get back on board. The only problem with people who fall off their resolutions in March is that they didn't get back on them. It's not too late.

  • Know that resolutions can start and restart at any time. You don't have to wait for a new year to start over.
