Let's take just a minute to talk about the delicious weekend ahead of us.
The bake sale is loaded with goodies like the heavenly cherry-filled pastries in the picture. Usually there are cinnamon rolls, breads, cookies, pies, angel food cakes, cupcakes, and lots of other delightfully decadent things. One year, I bought maple pecan scones. I've been thinking about them ever since.
If you're trying to avoid the bake sale for your health's sake, you can take yourself to the farmer's market, where we're selling locally grown produce. Zucchini, tomatoes, eggplant, summer squash, peppers, and lots of other things that I'm forgetting to mention.
Then, after you've filled a couple bags with delicious things to take home, it's time for supper.
Grilled chicken or fried fish, each fried and grilled right there. If you wanted, you could sit and watch them flip chicken. But who wants to do that when you've got a line-up of sides waiting for you? Green beans, baked potatoes, bread, iced tea, and lemonade. Then, when you're finished, you can go back up for a slice of pie at the pie stand.
After you peruse the auction items and listen to the live gospel music, you can go home, slip into a food coma, knowing that tomorrow is another wonderful day of food.
Saturday morning dawns bright and early, and the first thing on your mind is a plate of pancakes, apple sauce, locally raised sausage, orange juice, milk, and a steaming cup of coffee. Which is good, since that's exactly what's on the menu for breakfast at the benefit.
And after breakfast, you can get something to drink (pop, bottled water, hot or iced latte) and sit to listen to the singers and those who are giving the testimony. And then the auction. Bidding that fast makes you hungry. But you want to be hungry, right? Because you know that the food stands open at eleven and that you get your pick from walking tacos, grilled pork chops, pulled pork sandwiches, soft-serve ice cream, cotton candy, snow cones, chocolate chip cookies, more pie, and nachos and cheese.
If you think I'm exaggerating, check out the menu here.
