On Volunteering

I'd like to say that volunteering is a glamorous, recognition-inducing thing to do. I'd like to tell you that we reward our volunteers richly for their service.

But the truth is that we never could. Our volunteers do so much for our Home, and there's no way we could ever pay them back. We try to recognize their efforts and thank them for what they contribute to our Home, but sometimes we miss even that. Besides, the rewards of volunteering isn't something physical. Instead, it's a feeling in your heart that you've helped someone that couldn't help themselves.

The Home is a great place to volunteer, not because we have a great rewards program (like I said, there aren't many physical rewards), but because we can use every person, no matter what their talents are.

We have the musical ones in the dining room or lobby, playing or singing for the residents. We have the people who prefer to stay in the background doing things like popping popcorn, helping with our ladies' luncheon, and baking. We have those who prefer one-on-one interaction helping with mail, church, beauty shop, and driving to doctor's appointments. We have our exuberant go-getters running errands, doing miscellaneous jobs.

One thing people are often confused about is how much volunteering they should do and if they will be chained to a monthly schedule. If this is you, let me reassure you.

Each month I call my volunteers and ask them which dates suit them. There is no obligation when I call. You can volunteer as much or as little as you like. I say this to reassure you.

If you're on the fence about volunteering, I'd love to talk to you about what you feel are your unique gifts and how you see yourself using them at our Home.
